Standardizing the Servicing Landscape: Matt Tully on Compliance and Efficiency at 2026 MBA Servicing Solutions Conference
At Sagent, we believe that the future of servicing belongs to teams who turn complexity into clarity – and one of our leaders, Matt Tully (Chief Compliance Officer) brought this mindset (along with relevant intel) to a panel at the 2026 MBA Servicing Conference. Matt broke down how his work with the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization (MISMO) is simplifying compliance and document management for servicers industrywide.
The discussion, “MISMO Matters – Reducing Servicing Friction Through Standards That Work,” brought together four industry leaders to dissect how MISMO standards help servicers streamline processes, reduce risk, and improve operational efficiency.
Matt was joined by fellow industry experts:
- Rachael Macauley, Durector of Shared Services at ServiceMac, LLC,
- Perry Williams, Senior Program Manager at MISMO
- Courtney Thompson, Founder and CEO of Consigliera (and self-elected President of the Matt Tully Fan Club)
Setting a Clear Standard
The conversation kicked off by highlighting how the multiple “languages” across the mortgage ecosystem causes frequent pain points for mortgage professionals across operations and jurisdictions. In essence, this highlights a universal mortgaging truth: fragmented data and inconsistent document classification slow everyone down. With groups like MISMO setting the standards for professionals nationwide, less time is wasted on translating conflicting solutions and regulations. As Matt shared,
“[When I joined Sagent], what I realized as a service provider was that we need to be close to data and data standards, so that when they’re adopted, we can get them into our system.”
This journey to bring a standardized expectation and dataset is baked into platforms like Dara by Sagent, ensuring that servicers can have unified, standardized expectations and streamline their compliance processes. With consistent expectations in place, tech providers can bake standards into their systems and deliver more reliable, automated, and compliant solutions to their customers.
Frequent Document Debacles
Another servicing hurdle that Matt and his fellow panelists dissected was the complication of document management and handoffs. Missing documents, inconsistent file naming, and long extraction times across mortgage operations slows professionals down, increasing costs and hindering efficiency. Questions from “What docs do we have?” to “How should they be handled?” have plagued servicers for too long.
The panelists dissected solutions to this common problem, from standardizing file nomenclature to establishing procedures for handoffs. Dara was built by servicers for servicers, and these burdens were considered when building innovative solutions for the industry. Matt explained,
“From a servicer provider perspective, if we have a standard, we can build that into the system and serve that out very easily to the servicing customer.”
Leading the Industry’s Future
As MISMO maps industrywide future collaboration, Matt is at the helm as the Chair of the Prioritization Committee. With this working group, they evaluate what issues to tackle first and how to allocate resources to achieve the most pressing goals.
For servicing technology solution providers who are integral to developing standards but not yet a MISMO member, Matt explains how valuable membership is. To servicing providers who aren’t yet involved, he emphasizes that getting started might be scary, but getting integrated and involved is very easy (and for those who feel like they have a lot to learn, you can join Matt at MISMO Boot Camp later this year!).
As Matt made clear, strong standards empower strong technology. And strong technology empowers servicers to operate faster, smarter, and with far less friction. That’s not just the future of servicing — that’s the future MISMO is actively building.
